Spring was always the season of love to me.  Why wait for summer love when the spring brings warmer weather, fragrant flowers and the possibility of new, beautiful things?  Even if you’re in love already, spring is a perfect time to rediscover your passion.

I never leave home without a down comforter in the trunk of my car.  From chilly passengers to impromptu days at the beach, you never know when a down comforter will come in handy.  I’ll never forget the day my husband and I decided to take a ride to pick up a simple boat part.

We had to drive to a scenic area to pick up the part at a local marina.  After we got the part, we decided to stop at the deli for sandwiches because we felt so hungry.  My husband said it was a shame to miss such a lovely day and we should find a bench to eat outside.  Unfortunately, everyone else had the same idea and there were no benches left.

I reminded hubby I had the trusty down comforter in my trunk for these type of occasions.  We rode down the block and found a deserted little patch of beach.  We set up a spur-of-the-moment picnic and had the best time!  After an hour of laughing, eating and kissing, we fell in love all over again under the warm spring sun.  Thanks to my trusty down comforter, I didn’t miss a golden opportunity for romance by the beach.

With spring comes warmer weather, colorful flowers and longer days.  While everyone looks forward to sun and fun in the spring, it all means spring cleaning and allergies.  Don’t wind up too congested to have a good time or get decent sleep this year.  Here are a few suggestions that will have you falling asleep under your down comforter sooner than you might think.

1.  Use gloves and a mask when you spring clean.  You’re raising a lot of dust which can aggravate your allergies.  A glove keeps dirt from building under your fingernails and a mask protects your mouth and nose while breathing.

2.  Read the instructions on prescription and non-prescription allergy medications carefully.  Some medications might make you drowsy while others may energize you.  Be in the know so you can plan your medication, work and sleep schedule accordingly.

3.  Use a neti pot.  This simple device is found in pharmacies everywhere and offers natural relief for allergy congestion.  A neti pot looks like a small teapot.  You fill it with a saline solution to rinse out your sinuses.  This also removes allergens and debris.

4.  Have light, comfortable down bedding.  Take off your heavy blankets and down comforter from the winter.  When you’re too warm, it’s more difficult to breathe and sleep.  Use Egyptian cotton sheets and a light down comforter for comfortable spring sleeping.

The princess tried every night to get to sleep.  She was a fair maiden with soft, delicate skin.  Whenever she sank into her high, luxury mattresses she could still feel something digging into her.  She added mattresses to the pile yet still found herself unable to sleep at night.

After endless sleepless night, the princess started to feel frustrated.  She decided to find what was causing the problem.  After all, a princess needs her beauty sleep!  The princess enlisted the help of her trusted servant to disassemble the tall tower of mattresses.

Beneath the mattresses, the princess discovered a pea!  The loyal servant was surprised the pea caused the princess such distress.  The princess assured her it was unbelievably uncomfortable and worried about whether it would happen again.

The servant told the princess about plush down feather beds.  She assured the princess she would feel like she was falling into a cloud when she went to bed.  The princess decided to get a down feather bed and slept happily ever after.

My kids look forward to warm weather weekends so they can go camping in our backyard.  If you have a private backyard, you know the opportunities for adventure are limitless.  Every tree, rock and nook becomes a mystery waiting to be solved.  Children naturally want to set up camp to sleep in their favorite place.

Even though spring days are filled with sunshine, the evenings often get chilly.  Even summer nights sometimes have a chill.  I keep my old down comforters to use for backyard camping excursions.  I make sure to throw a couple of insulated, comfortable down comforteres in the tent for the children to curl up and get warm.

The down comforters serve a variety of purposes.  The children use them to make hideaways, snuggle up to read a book, make a fort and then fall asleep happily under the stars.  If you don’t know what to do with your older down comforters, save them for backyard camping and beyond.  Cozy down comforters are also great to have in pop-up campers, RVs, boats and the trunk of your vehicle for picnics and all night adventures.

A comfortable down pillow is the foundation for a solid sleep and successful day.  To choose the right pillow for your needs, figure out your typical sleeping position.  Do you usually sleep on your back, stomach or side?  If you don’t know, ask someone to monitor your sleeping position so you can determine your favorite one.

If you sleep on your side, you need a thicker down pillow because your shoulder keeps your head further from the bed.  A regular down pillow is comfortable for both back and stomach sleepers.  People who sleep on their stomach should choose the softest down pillow possible.

Goose down pillows are top quality but duck down also offers maximum comfort.  Synthetic down pillows are ideal for people who are allergic to traditional down.  A pillow with a higher thread count has a softer surface and a tighter weave to hold the down feathers in.

Down pillows also come in sizes to suit your preferences including standard, queen and king.  Regular sized down pillows are perfect if you want to place several pillows on your bed.  The right type of down pillow means a perfect night’s sleep for a more productive morning!

As the weather warms up, we’re all happy to get more time outdoors.  Planting gardens, watching sprouts come up, biking, walking and playing are all favorite springtime activities.  After a day of soaking up fresh air and sunshine, there’s nothing better than a cozy, inviting bed.

A light down comforter is perfect for all seasons.  Down is insulated, which means it holds in heat when it’s cold and it keeps you cooler when it’s warm.  Even with a down comforter, there are warm days you will perspire.  Choose silky, absorbent Egyptian cotton sheets to have right next to your skin.

The superior quality and feel of Egyptian cotton is world-renowned.  Across the globe people purchase Egyptian cotton sheets because nothing else feels quite at good.  The tight weave, fine cotton and incredible texture make Egyptian cotton sheets the ultimate luxury.  Why not treat yourself to a pampering new set of Egyptian cotton sheets for the warmer days ahead?  You’ll be glad you did when you sink into a soft, cool bed on a sultry summer night.

You’ve probably heard the old saying, “Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.”  It holds true because bed bugs really exist and can seriously disrupt your sleep.  These tiny, wingless bed bugs are the size of a poppy seed and feed on human blood.  Bed bugs next in your down bedding and cause skin irritations over time.

Bed bugs are white when molting then turn colors such as tan, brown and burnt orange.  When they bite you at night, they also emit a small amount of saliva.  This saliva makes your skin red, irritated and ridden with rashes with repeated biting.  Although bed bugs feed on blood, there are no reported incidents of them spreading disease.

Used mattresses and bed frames must be carefully examined for evidence of bed bugs.  Place a fresh mattress on a clean bed frame with new down bedding and down pillows.  Keep your bedding off the floor and wash your sheets and comforters regularly.  Be careful when you return home from traveling or visiting because bed bugs might reside in your luggage then nest in your bedroom.  With a few precautions, you can sleep tight under your down comforter and the bed bugs won’t bite.
