When it comes to your bed, nothing beats the warmth and comfort that a down comforter provides on a cold winter night. But are there any down alternative comforters for those who may be allergic to goose down? Let’s take a look.

Fortunately, there are some alternative down comforters to choose from. You can find hypo allergenic comforters and others made out of synthetic materials as well.

Keep in mind that most of the these alternatives will not be as warm as goose or duck down, but they are a very close match. The main benefit of course is that you will completely eliminate the allergy risk.

Some comforters are made from the wool of llamas, which can be quite comfortable in most cases. The material is lighter than the wool from sheep and should not present an allergy risk.

Hypo allergenic down comforters will in many cases also trap the dust mites and other particles that accumulate over time. It prevents the particles from being inhaled and causing an allergic reaction.

Some common down alternative comforter brands to look for include brands such as Primaloft, Hyperclean and TempraKON.

So, if you suffer from allergies, don’t feel you’re out of luck when it comes to a comforter. With just a little searching, you can quickly find the perfect down alternative cover.

canadain-goose.jpgThe best down comes from mature birds. Down from a immature bird tends to have poor filling power and collapses in a relatively short time. However, when age and maturity are equal, goose down is considered better than duck down. Eider down is considered the finest quality down material and thus the most expensive. You can find all your goose down comforter needs at Sleepy Down Comforters.

pac-coast.jpgIt’s a safe bet that you’ve never heard a goose complaining about the cold! Geese are equipped with down, thick fluff that grows on their undersides. This keeps them warm and protected, even in the coldest water. Goose down is incredibly insulating, while still lightweight and breathable. That is why bedding made from goose down is such a popular choice.

There is a wide variety of down comforters available, ranging from those made with duck down and feathers to those made from synthetic down alternatives. Of all the down comforters, though, goose down is the most luxurious. Goose down grows thicker and in bigger clusters than duck down, resulting in a higher-quality comforter. Unlike duck down comforters, goose down does not have an unpleasant odor. In fact, they have virtually no smell at all.

There is some variety among goose down comforters. At the low end of the spectrum are the down and feather mixed comforters. While it is virtually impossible to completely remove feathers from down, the less feathers the better. Feathers are heavier and harder than down, leading to firmer comforters. Down is much more lightweight, creating a fluffier product. In addition, goose feathers are sharp and can poke through the cover to prick your skin.

florence.jpgSpring is usually the official start of the allergy season. However, many allergies that are associated with spring are caused by poor indoor air quality in homes rather than just outdoor pollen from spring flowers and trees. Here are some quick tips to make your home or office allergy-free:

Vacuum up pollen spores, dust mites and other allergens (including pet dander) with a high grade HEPA vacuum cleaner twice weekly. Vacuum walls, carpet, flooring, chairs and furniture . . . anywhere dust can collect. Make sure the vacuum has HEPA sealed filtration so no allergens are released back into the air when vacuuming.

Wash all bedding in 140-degree hot water at least twice weekly to eliminate dust mites, pet allergens and pollen. Use dust mite covers for your mattresses, pillows and comforters to further protect yourself and your family from dust mites.

Shower and wash your hair every night before you go to bed. People often bring pollen and other seasonal allergens into their homes on their clothes and their hair. Use shower filters that remove chlorine and other chemicals too.

Keep pets off of your bed and out of your bedroom. Sorry, this is a small price to pay for allergy relief. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary from allergens. So tempt your pets to sleep elsewhere.

Down ThrowsIt’s tough to imagine real down throws and down blankets for this price. Even the local discount warehouses don’t sell this type of quality at this price. For ten dollars MORE than what I paid here I can get a lower quality blanket at the store here. It used to be that the retailers could always say “Well, you do have to pay shipping when you order online!” True, but now that the prices are this low the extra money for shipping still offers a HUGE savings over traditional retail.

I’m thrilled to see things moving in the direction in terms of luxury bedding prices. I’ve always enjoyed the finer things in life, especially when it comes to my bedding. At Sleepy Down Comforters I can finally afford to have the products I like without breaking the bank. And their knowledgeable service guaranteed that I made the right choice the first time around!
