When you’ve been married for over ten years, it gets more difficult to buy presents for holidays and birthdays. After all, who really wants to give another bauble or novelty that will be forgotten by next year? I told my husband to purchase practical items but he still refuses to buy blenders for Christmas.

Last year, a large package was waiting under the tree for me on Christmas morning. I wondered what it could be. It certainly didn’t look like jewelry or candy. I shook it but it didn’t make a sound and it wasn’t really that heavy. I tore open the wrapping with anticipation. Inside the red and green tissue paper was a soft, puffy down throw blanket in a soft sage color.

I wrapped the down around my shoulders and gave my husband an enthusiastic hug and kiss. He smiled and asked if he was right that something practical could be luxurious and personal, too. Alright, when you’ve been married for more than a decade you have to admit the other person is right once in awhile. This time my husband found the perfect Christmas gift. This year I’m going to return the favor and buy him a down throw blanket of his own to use while we snuggle by the fireplace.

Today is Cyber Monday, the new holiday shopping tradition. Instead of getting trampled at malls on Black Friday, many shoppings are opting for the safety and convenience of online shopping. Cyber Monday celebrates the online shopper, offering deals and new products just for you.

Now that you’re ready to take advantage of Cyber Monday, why not purchase down throw blankets, comforters and pillows for your favorite people? Down is a luxurious gift everyone can use. With the winter chill and high cost of utilities, people love to snuggle under a warm down blanket instead of turning up the thermostat.

Down gifts are ideal for people of all ages. Children love plenty of soft pillows and a colorful duvet for their bedrooms. Seniors appreciate the cozy comfort of a fluffy down comforter. Even your co-workers will love a down throw to keep their legs warm when someone else is using the portable electric heater.

Why deal with the hostile holiday masses at the stores when you can shop online in peace from the comfort of your own home or office? Down bedding is practical, timeless present for all the people on your holiday gift list.

Down pillows, comforters and blankets are filled with feathers. Everyone covets down bedding because of its superior insulation and softness. But what makes feathers the ultimate source of comfort and warmth?

Scientifically speaking, feathers are an epidermal growth covering birds. Feathers are made of proteins and are very complex structural organs on vertebrates. Feathers insulate birds from the elements and keep them warm. A bird is known by the appearance of its feathers. Two types of feathers cover a bird’s body – vaned feathers and down feathers. Vaned feathers have a central shaft with branching on either side. Down feathers are soft and found underneath the vaned feathers. Down bedding may contain either type or both types of feathers.

veryday people realize the insular benefits of feathers when they snuggle up under high end down bedding. Down comforters keep you warm on a cold day yet they are lightweight. Down pillows cradle your head in complete comfort. When you relax on the sofa, there is nothing more cozy than a down throw blanket. The incredible warmth offered by soft, light feathers is absolutely amazing.

Now that the winter chill is setting in, I started to feel under the weather. At the end of last week, my head was aching, my eyes were red and puffy and my throat felt sore. After taking all the Vitamin C and Tylenol I could, I decided the only way to get rid of that flu-like feeling was some rest.

Once the kids got home from school on Friday, I was free to lay down. Armed with a box of tissues and a tall glass of juice, I headed to my bedroom for some much-needed rest. I sank into my soft featherbed and wrapped myself in my puffy down comforter. The warmth and softness completely enveloped me. Within minutes, I was peacefully sleeping.

My husband brought me some chicken soup later that night. I woke up to sip some soup then settled right back into my comforting down bedding. For the past two days, I was cuddled by my down comforters as I nursed myself back to health.

On Sunday night, I finally emerged from the depths of my down bedding to take a shower and get the kids prepared for school. Spending a couple of days relaxing under my down comforter definitely did the trick.

Now that I’m back on my feet and faced the hectic pace of Monday, I’m thankful for the oasis my down bedding offers when I don’t feel good. If only there were more reasons to spend all day under the down blankets!

Although many people cover their down comforters with a colorful duvet, you can also keep your down white. Pale duvet covers and the beauty of the down comforter itself is a great beginning to a beautiful room.

There are a variety of ways to decorate with white. If you decide to keep your down bedding white, here are a few suggestions:

-Place a colorful down blanket over your down comforter. When you lounge in your bedroom, you can slip under the blanket without disturbing your bedding. It also adds a splash of color to your bed.

-Use various shades of white throughout your room for a dazzling effect. If you use a single shade of white, your room looks sterile rather than pristine. From bright white to ivory, an array of shades adds interest and depth to your bedroom décor.

-Mix up your bedroom décor by season. Keep all your down bedding white and add accessories to customize your room. Floral curtains and pastel throw pillows are perfect for spring and summer. Bold colored throw rugs and matching curtains add appeal during the fall and winter. When you have white bedding, you can add a rainbow of other colors without clashing.

White is a good beginning for literally thousands of different bedroom designs. Be adventurous and spice up your décor more often when you choose basic white down bedding.

Now that you have a decadent down comforter, how do you keep it clean and puffy? Whether you have a windowpane down comforter with sewn-through boxes or a single constructed down comforter, there are simple ways to keep them looking and feeling great.

Shake out your down blankets, comforters and pillows everyday to give them proper fullness. When you strip your bed, fluff your featherbed. You can also tumble dry your down bedding for five or so minutes to bring it back to life.

Protect your down comforter with a duvet and your down pillows with pillowcases. Refresh your bedding by frequently washing the duvet and pillowcases while you shake out and air your down items.

Gentle machine washing with mild dish detergent can be used to clean down bedding. Many down enthusiasts prefer to have their down bedding professionally dry cleaned. Either method will get your down bedding clean and refreshed.

Did you also know down comforters can last for decades? There is no set time for down spoilage. If you take good care of your down bedding, it will keep you warm and happy for a lifetime.

This is the first entry in our weekly series about decorating with down. With rising fuel and utility costs, everyone is concerned about the cost of heating their homes. Turning down the heat can save your significantly over the course of the fall and winter seasons. Keep a down throw blanket around so you can always combat the cold.

While we all want to save money on home heating costs, if you get cold and sick you haven’t saved anything at all when you consider medical bills and lost time from work. Have a down throw handy so you can stay warm on the coldest days. Decorative down throw blankets look pretty displayed over chairs and sofas or on their own attractive blanket rack. When a chill sets in, you simply grab your down throw blanket and put it over your legs to feel toasty warm.

I have a colorful down throw blanket over the back of my living room sofa. When I watch television, sew or read at night, I put the down over my lap instead of heading for the thermostat. I also keep a down throw at my office in the reception area. The throw has a patchwork design and I hang it over a blanket rack. If I get cold at my desk, I throw the down over my legs. Nobody even sees it and I don’t run the risk of fires or burns from portable heaters.

Displaying a down throw blanket in your home and office is a decorative, practical idea.

We are revamping our blog to better answer our readers’ questions, curiosities and concerns about down. Once a week we will post “The Down Low On Down” to discuss down history, cleaning, general use and functions. Our other weekly column will be “Decorating With Down”, offering tips decorating your home with down comforters and other down accessories. Finally, we will do a blog every week called “Down Under Cover” featuring fun fictional and non-fictional stories about down.

Today “The Down Low On Down” will address ones of the most the basic questions – what IS down? The word down refers to the layer of fine feathers found under the tough, hard exterior feathers of a bird. Young birds are usually completely covered in down until their feathers mature. Down is used as a padding and an insulator in bedding, comforters, pillows and sleeping backs. Down jackets are a popular way to take down around town to stay warm. Usually goose down is used in the bedding and accessories you buy. Down offers superior insulation and warmth, which is particularly useful in light of rising oil prices. Simply turn down your thermostat and curl up with a down comforter or throw to keep toasty warm!
