Question: Is it safe to machine wash a down comforter? Answer: Most down and synthetic-down comforters are machine washable. Be sure to use a mild detergent (such as Woolite) and a cool temperature setting. Dry the comforter on a delicate setting, and throw in a couple of tennis balls to help keep the down from clumping.
Remember: Frequent washing will affect the down’s fluffiness, so keep the washing to a minimum. Twice a year is often enough to keep your Down Comforter clean and soft like you like it. (Include the job in your annual spring-cleaning , once the weather turns warm.) If you use a Duvet cover to protect your comforter, you can prolong the life of your comforter and you can stretch the time between cleanings to every three to five years. To control dampness between washings, hang the comforter inside or on a clothesline.
